Democrats in the State Legislature Continue to Fight for a Balanced Budget

Friday, June 26th 2009
Dear Friends,

Democrats in the state legislature continue to fight for a balanced budget with real cuts and smart investments to help carry our state through these tough economic times.

Fundamentally, we know it is wrong to balance the budget on the backs of the middle class, working poor, sick, elderly, and children. But it’s clear Governor Rell and the Republicans simply disagree.

Today, the Connecticut House joined the Senate in passing a budget that reflects the best of Connecticut values – restoring grotesque cuts in funding proposed by Governor Rell to nursing homes, food vouchers for poor seniors, ConnPACE subsidies for prescription drugs, LIFE STAR helicopters, elderly housing, early intervention for at-risk children, youth services programs, successful prisoner re-entry programs, family resource centers, after-school programs, the Children’s Trust Fund, and support for internet access at our libraries and schools. The list goes on and on.

Governor Rell has refused to sit down with Democratic leaders to negotiate a budget and has promised a veto. The Governor is committed to balancing the budget through unacceptable cuts, hidden fee increases, and borrowing – a recipe that will devastate Connecticut families and communities, and ensure that only lower and middle income people are asked to sacrifice.

Now that the legislature has passed a balanced budget, please call Governor Rell at 860-566-4840 and demand that she finally come to the table and negotiate with the legislature. Governor Rell needs to stop the political posturing and acknowledge that balancing the budget with unreasonable cuts and hiking fees and bus fares is not a real solution.

Call Governor Rell and tell her it’s time to stop the political posturing, tell her the state can’t afford an absent Governor during this crisis and ask her to pull up a seat at the table and get this done for the people of Connecticut.

Sincerely,

Nancy DiNardo

P.S.

Following the passage of a budget by both the Connecticut Senate and the House, Democratic State Party Chairwoman Nancy DiNardo issued the following statement urging Governor Rell to drop her veto pen and finally pull up a seat at the negotiating table.

“I have to wonder if she’s ever considered a career in theatre, because Governor Rell is certainly putting on quite the show,” said Chairwoman DiNardo. “Now that the charade of passing a budget that she herself has indicated she’ll reject is nearly over, I encourage the Governor to put down her veto pen and pull up a seat at the table. Five days before the end of the fiscal year, non-profits are concerned about making payroll; cities and towns are crossing their fingers for continued funding; and it’s high time Governor Rell herself became engaged in the process – not her chief of staff or her spokesperson. Connecticut residents can’t wait through another act – they need action now.”
